Obstetrics focuses on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, while gynaecology deals with the overall health of the female reproductive system, including the uterus, ovaries and vagina. Many healthcare providers specialize in both areas, providing comprehensive care for women's reproductive health.
It is recommended to schedule your first visit when you become sexually active or if you have any concerns regarding your menstrual cycle, fertility or general reproductive health. For pregnancy-related concerns, it's best to see an obstetrician as soon as you find out you're pregnant.
Common signs of a healthy pregnancy include the absence of excessive bleeding, consistent weight gain, the presence of pregnancy symptoms like nausea (morning sickness) and a steady foetal heartbeat. Every pregnancy is different, so it is important to regularly visit your obstetrician for monitoring.
Preparing for your first gynaecological exam involves scheduling the appointment at a time when you're not menstruating (unless it's necessary), avoiding douching or vaginal products for 24 hours before the exam and being ready to discuss your medical history, including menstrual cycles, sexual activity and any health concerns.
A Pap smear is a test where cells are gently scraped from your cervix to check for abnormalities that could indicate cervical cancer. It is important for early detection of cancerous or precancerous conditions. Regular screenings are recommended starting at age 21 or three years after becoming sexually active.
Treatment for irregular periods depends on the underlying cause, which could include hormonal imbalances, stress or health conditions like PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). Common treatments may include hormonal birth control, lifestyle changes, or specific medications. A gynaecologist will assess your situation and recommend the best course of action.
In most cases, sexual intercourse is safe during pregnancy unless your obstetrician advises against it due to specific health concerns or complications. It is important to communicate with your doctor if you have concerns about sexual activity or any changes in your health during pregnancy.
There are various contraception methods, including oral birth control pills, intrauterine devices (IUDs), contraceptive implants, condoms and permanent solutions like sterilization. The choice of contraception should be made in consultation with your healthcare provider based on your health, preferences and lifestyle.
During a prenatal visit, your obstetrician will monitor the health of both you and your baby. You are likely to have a physical exam, blood tests and possibly an ultrasound. You can expect to discuss symptoms, ask any questions about your pregnancy and receive guidance on maintaining a healthy lifestyle during your pregnancy.
Menopause typically marks the end of a woman's ability to become pregnant naturally, as the ovaries no longer release eggs. However, until you've gone through 12 months without a period, you could still become pregnant. If you have concerns about fertility during or after menopause, it is important to discuss them with your gynaecologist.
